THINKING ABOUT BECOMING A WCSC
SOCCER REFEREE: FAQ Is there an Age Requirement?: Yes,
you must be 14 by July 1st of the seasonal year!
That means you must be at least 14 years of
age prior to August 1, 2009 to participate in any WCSC Referee Training offered
in 2009.
Why Should I Referee? Frankly soccer refereeing is
not for everyone. But those who like refereeing like it a lot. It is an
excellent way to get into shape, learn the rules, and help your soccer club and
community, build camaraderie with other officials, and earn extra money. You
also have the best seat in the house.
What About Training? The Walnut Creek Soccer Club
has two, 18-hour entry level training clinics scheduled on June (Monday and
Wednesday evenings) and July (Tuesday and Thursday evenings). After you complete
the training and pass the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) examination,
you receive a Grade 8 badge that is applicable throughout the United States.
Also you will have the opportunity to apply your classroom training into actual
game situations during our New Referee In-Service Field Jamboree in August.
During the fall season, we have three monthly 2 Hour In Service Meetings.
Is There a Big Commitment of Time? If
you can referee just one game (average length 1 hour) a week, that will help a
lot. Of course, you can do more games if you want. If you referee 10 League
games during the season, your registration fee ($40) and uniform fee ($50) are
refunded to you.
What About Uniforms? All new referees who pass
the USSF exam receive a free “referee kit” that includes a complete uniform
(shirt, shorts, and socks), whistle, lanyard, red and yellow cards, cardholder
and flags. We provide everything you need including a referee bag to hold your
gear!
Am I Paid? Soccer officials, adults and youths,
are paid from $20 to $30 per game depending on the age level of the teams.
Is This Program for My Son or Daughter? YES!
Besides the relatively good pay for youths, refereeing is a great way to gain
confidence and bearing. Youth referees are normally assigned lower age group
games involving Under 10 and Under 12 Age Groups. Walnut Creek has a history of
producing excellent youth referees. The 2001, 2003, 2006, 2007 & 2008 Youth
Referees of the Year for District Four and the 2008 Female Youth Referee Of The
Year Northern California were from the WCSC!.
Am I Going to be Thrown Out to the Wolves? NO!
Before the season starts, a senior WCSC referee will be assigned as mentor to
new youth and adult refs. Your mentor will watch one or more of your early games
and provide direction and guidance, and answer your questions during the season.
The club initiated this successful program last season. Also, the Club has
instituted a Field Marshall Program in the U10-U12 House Division. The Field
Marshall is there to support you when needed.
Are You On-Line? Go to www.wcsc.com and find
